The German supply route had plenty of air cover. Only about 150 miles from


Siciliy to Tunis, while about 900 miles from Gibraltar. So trying to control that supply route would have been pretty difficult. I don't know if Gibraltar was a big enough base to be able to project power that far.

The Germans inflicted heavy losses on the Americans at Kasserine Pass, but a week later, that were back where they started from. So it's not like they got a lot out of it either.
